The Geology of the Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is one of the most profound testaments to the depths of Earth’s history. The geologic story exposed in its walls are one of the
great laboratories for studying the history and the processes that shape our planet. This summer I was able to experience this from a whole new perspective as
I spent 17 days rafting through the Canyon with two other HCC science faculty (Rus Higley and Heather Price). Come find out more about this amazing place and
see views not just from the top, but also the bottom.

The Calculus of Money and Ethics
The creation/discovery of the calculus revolutionized world history. While its applications to the physical sciences are well known, this
seminar will focus on two uses of the calculus within economics. We will explore ways a government might optimize tax revenue within a
competitive market as well as the mathematics behind one measure of income distribution. We will also unpack the ethical concerns that lie
behind each scenario. To cap off the talk, we will discuss the implications of our philosophy of mathematics and how it may impact our
monetary decision making.
