The Calculus of Money and Ethics
The creation/discovery of the calculus revolutionized world history. While its applications to the physical sciences are well known, this
seminar will focus on two uses of the calculus within economics. We will explore ways a government might optimize tax revenue within a
competitive market as well as the mathematics behind one measure of income distribution. We will also unpack the ethical concerns that lie
behind each scenario. To cap off the talk, we will discuss the implications of our philosophy of mathematics and how it may impact our
monetary decision making.
