If you make it to one science seminar all quarter, make it this one. Come see our chemists do all kinds of neat chemistry. Your favorites will be there (including elephant toothpaste!) and there will be some new ones too. There will be smoke, a few mirrors, and lots of oohs and ahhhs. Those with bushy eyebrows (who want to keep them) may not want to sit in the front row.

The M9.0 Tohoku (Japan) Earthquake and Tsunami
A month ago today, the largest earthquake to strike Japan in the last century occurred. The shaking impacted millions of people, but it was the tsunami that proved catastrophic. Japan has consistently proved itself to be the most disaster-prepared nation in the world, but with about 25,000 people dead or missing we need to ask "What can we do better?" Perhaps more importantly for residents of the Pacific Northwest, which faces a similar threat, what can we learn from this tragedy?

Capturing Microplastic Debris from Puget Sound and Neighboring Waters
Researchers at the Center for Urban Waters have developed methods to collect and process ocean samples (water, sediments, beach material) to quantify the amount of microplastics in the ocean environment. These researchers are in the process of surveying the Puget Sound and neighboring waters to understand the distribution of plastics in our waterways. Preliminary results show that microplastics have been found in every water sample collected thus far. Their goal is to partner with other organizations and create a data set representative of the Puget Sound.

For those who lived through the 1940s through 1960s in the United States, there is no more evocative image of urban grittiness than the steel mill cities of the East coast. While our need and use of steel has only increased in that time, our sensibilities and environmental laws have changed the nature of the production of steel.

Living on Unstable Ground: The Causes, Signs and Mitigation of Landslides in the Puget Sound Region
In January of 1997, more than 300 landslides struck within the Seattle city limits. These slides did roughly $100 million dollars in damage, almost all of it uninsured. The damage was similar throughout the Puget Sound region, just far less documented. Why are we so subject to landslides in his area? How can you protect yourself?
