How to teach college Algebra: What’s new, what’s not
Helen will discuss the findings of her dissertation study which used case-study methods to explore the factors that influenced
community college mathematics faculty members as they reasoned about college algebra reform. College algebra reform stems from

student audience for the course. The urgency expressed in the calls for reform results in part because of large enrollments in the
course and the continuing need to cultivate talent in mathematics and science. The primary data source for her multiple case study
was 27 semi-structured interviews with mathematics faculty housed in three community colleges mathematics departments engaged in
college algebra reform.
